Upskilling the next generation of anglers

IFS Officer Chris Boon with a happy Bothwell High student

Recently Bothwell District High School ran a fly fishing field trip at Weasel Plains Dam that Inland Fisheries were invited to attend.

Held over two days, the students were introduced to both the theoretical and practical components of fly fishing and learned though hands-on experience the art of fly fishing. A range of wet and dry flies were used, which introduced the students to several forms of fly fishing methods including sight-fishing. The students also learned how to work against a head wind as the last day progressed.

A total of 12 fish were caught including several healthy brown trout along the shallow, weedy shore and some rainbow trout from the deeper areas of the lake.

It was a great two days out with perfect weather and a wonderful opportunity for IFS to encourage and work with the next generation of inland anglers.
