Lake Leake angler lands early Christmas gift
A second tagged trout has been caught, as part the Inland Fisheries Service (IFS) Tasmanian Tagged Trout Promotion.
The promotion is part of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to support and grow freshwater angling participation, with the IFS tagging and releasing 16 brown trout each valued at $5,000, into nine lakes across the state.
After the first tagged trout was caught at Huntsman Lake in late October, the second tagged trout has now been caught at Lake Leake by fisherman Phil Bryan.
Phil has a shack at Lake Leake and has been fishing there for 70 years.
Phil advised he almost missed out on the opportunity to find the tagged trout, as he had four trout in the boat and was heading back to his shack for lunch when his outboard broke down. While using his electric motor to get home, he decided to cast his line for a troll on the way home and that’s when he caught the tagged fish.
Fourteen chances to catch a tagged trout remain at the following locations:
• Lake Mackintosh
• Lake Rowallan
• Hunstman Lake (1 tagged fish remaining)
• yingina / Great Lake
• Bradys Lake
• Arthurs Lake
• Lake Sorell
• Craigbourne Lake.
To claim a prize, anglers need to catch a brown trout with the correct tag and report the details of the catch, with photo evidence, to the IFS. Fish caught in the Tagged Trout Promotion must be kept with tag intact for verification.
Entry to the Tasmanian Tagged Trout Promotion is open to holders of a current freshwater angling licence or persons aged under 14 who have the permission of their parent or guardian.
