Lake Augusta brown trout

Easter is a fantastic time to wet a line and try your luck at catching a Tassie trout!

At this time of year fish will be feeding hard to put on condition ahead of the upcoming spawning season, and after another warm and dry summer, the trout will be benefiting from the recent cooler water temperatures around the State.

As an added bonus, there is still time to catch a $5,000 tagged trout this season, with 12 tagged fish waiting to be caught.

Tagged trout remain at the following locations:

  • Lake Mackintosh
  • Lake Rowallan
  • Hunstman Lake (1 tagged fish remaining)
  • Yingina / Great Lake
  • Bradys Lake
  • Arthurs Lake (1 tagged fish remaining)
  • Lake Sorell

Please remember that most brown trout waters close at 11.59 pm on Sunday 27 April 2025.

Despite the closure of the brown trout waters, Huntsman Lake, Yingina / Great Lake and the Bradys chain of waters remain open all year round, meaning the chance to catch a tagged trout continues throughout the off-season. There are also tagged fish in Lakes Mackintosh and Rowallan, which remain open until Sunday 1 June 2025.

Refer to the Tasmanian Inland Fishing Code 2024-25 (ifs.tas.gov.au) or go to the Infish app 2.0 to see where you can fish through autumn and into winter.

Happy Easter from everyone at IFS and stay safe on the water - our compliance team will be out and about so say hi!
