Be safe around Hydro Tasmania sites
Following a recent incident reported by Hydro Tasmania crews, they wish to highlight just how important it is to be aware of changing water conditions near hydropower assets
The restricted area on the left in the attached picture is fenced-off and displays several warning signs, however, crews recently discovered members of the public and vehicles on the riverbed. While this area of Nive River may look calm, it is downstream of Liapootah Dam which regularly spills water. Only a short time later, the channel became deep and turbulent.
Water releases from power stations and dams can happen without warning, creating strong currents and sudden depth changes. Even if an area seems safe at one moment, it might not be the next.
To stay safe around hydropower, please:
Stick to publicly accessible areas – you can find day-use areas and campgrounds at www.hydro.com.au/things-to-do
Respect all safety signage and fencing and remain vigilant of changing water levels. The most dangerous areas are clearly signed for your safety!
Before you head out, check out our visitor and safety information at www.hydro.com.au/visitor-safety
