Great news ahead of the new trout season!
Thanks to recent wet weather and valued support from Hydro Tasmania, we've managed to achieve most of our planned adult brown trout stockings in recent weeks.
With crucial help from Hydro Tasmania, on 21 May, the gates at Lake Augusta were opened and the water held in storage flowed downstream into Liawenee Canal, with wild brown trout wasting no time swimming straight into our fish trapping area. Holding water and releasing later in the spawning run allowed us to salvage part of our fish collection efforts from yingina / Great Lake this year.
Following some much-needed rainfall, we moved to Arthurs Lake, capturing trout in our dedicated spawning traps and transferring more wild brown trout to important fisheries like Four Springs Lake, Penstock Lagoon, Curries River Reservoir, South Riana Dam, Nineteen Lagoons and more.
Despite the belated start this season, we have managed to stock over 7,500 wild adult brown trout into assisted fisheries in time for the season opening on 3 August, with further opportunities for collection of brown trout from our fish trap on Lake King William in the coming weeks.
Our stocking efforts have not only been confined to just brown trout.
To date, we have added to the mix by stocking 14,500 healthy triploid rainbow trout averaging 500 grams, into lakes across the State.
In addition, Lake Plimsol was stocked with 365 brook trout, weighing 2 kg and 200 brookies weighing 150 grams. One hundred brook trout at around 150 grams were also stocked into Clarence Lagoon.
To complement our adult fish stockings, we currently have 100,000 brown trout and 30,000 rainbow trout eggs being incubated at our New Norfolk hatchery and the Salmon Ponds. Once ready, these fry will be used to stock a small number of fisheries within the state.
The IFS fish stocking program is part of our commitment to enhancing Tasmania's recreational fisheries, ensuring our waters perform at their best and creating an exciting experience for all anglers!
While we continue our fish stockings over the coming weeks, the best way to keep up to date on our stocking program is to regularly visit our website at https://www.ifs.tas.gov.au/fisheries/stocking/ or accessing stocking information via the InFish app.
The Infish app also makes it easy to log your fishing information via the Angler Diary feature.
Good luck and tight lines to all freshwater anglers for the start of the Tassie trout season on 3 August
